What is Hantavirus?

What is Hantavirus?

People can become infected through contact with hantavirus-infected rodents or their urine and droppings. The Sin Nombre hantavirus, first recognized in 1993, is one of several New World hantaviruses circulating in the US. Old World hantaviruses, found across the world, can cause Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). Rodent control in and around the home remains the primary strategy for preventing hantavirus infection. Infection with hantavirus can progress to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which can be fatal.

Rodent Control and Cleanup

The best way to prevent the possible infection of Hantavirus is to control the population of rodents around your home or place of business. If you find signs of rodents, including droppings please take the following steps;

  • Wear rubber, latex, or vinyl gloves when cleaning urine and droppings
  • Spray the urine and droppings with a disinfectant or a mixture of bleach and water and let soak 5 minutes.
  • Use a paper towel to pick up the urine and droppings, and dispose of the waste in the garbage.
  •
